Anna Dressed in Blood
by Kendare Blake
Age: Young Adult. Definitely, definitely Young Adult
Series: 1 of 2
Contains: Oh let’s see…death, murder, ghosts, blood and gore (like people getting ripped in half and their guts spilling out kind of thing), bullying, and lots and lots of swearing.
If people knew what I was up to, they’d probably try to stop me. The idiots would take Casper’s side, and then I’d have to kill Casper and them after Casper bit their throats out. I’m no superhero.
Book-a-likes: really, a TON of stuff by Stephen King…, Bad Girls Don’t Die trilogy (though much less bloody than this…) by Katie Alender
So let’s start with the name. That’s a nice, freaky name for a book. And this book is nice and freaky. We follow Cass and his mom. Cass kills ghosts, his mom’s a Wiccan, and daddy died doing the family business.
Now these ghosts aren’t your standard oh-I-was-terrible-in-life-and-now-I’m-a-monster-in-death type. Oh no. Those people seem to use up all their fury in life, and so the ghosties are usually the innocent victims of some terrible crime. And for whatever reason that makes them lash out and kill people.
Hey, we’ve all got issues.
So Cass gets a tip from a contact to head to Canada and stick his special ghost-killing knife into some ghost chick named Anna Dressed in Blood. Murdered on prom night. How sad.
Except Anna’s story isn’t that simple and killing her isn’t either. Cass can’t seem to do a thing against her, even when she rips a dude in half right in front of him.
Yep. That’s right. She rips people in half.
Seriously. It’s gross. You read this one, don’t say I didn’t warn you…
Also, like I mentioned at the top, there is a MASSIVE amount of bad language in this book. If that doesn’t bother you, whatever. But I just kept looking at it thinking
Interesting and varied cast of characters. The idea that the ghosts don’t work like they do in most books is great. Nice creep factor going on. If you’re into horror and not afraid of things that go bump and squish in the night, you should totally check out Anna Dressed in Blood for your Halloween scary reads!
